Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, recently fired the Secretary of the Air Force (SECAF), Michael Wynne, and Air Force Chief of Staff (CSAF), General Michael Moseley. Although he acted within his rights as Secretary of Defense in doing so, it appears there may have been other reasons beside the stated nuclear incidents that were really behind this action. Both Wynn and Moseley were pressing Congress for funds to maintain the viability of our Air Force in the future. Our fleet is seriously aging, let alone in need of modernizing to prepare for future conflicts. And it takes decades to plan and develop air power. Secretary Gates has accused the Air Force (and all the Services) of "planning for the next war" as if that were a crime. Failure to plan ahead is a fatal course of action which will not become evident until it is too late.
