Protect Your Personal Credit Information

Do you get preapproved credit card and loan offers in your mailbox? When you check your credit report do you wonder who all those agencies are that submitted inquiries and received your credit information? Are you concerned that the credit agencies are giving your personal information to anyone that requests it? Do you feel the indiscriminate dissemination of your personal information to anyone that requests it just increases the possibility that some crook will steal your identity? If you do, then you need to check out the government website I just found.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Protecting America’s Consumers website outlines a number of options available to individuals who want to limit the dissemination of their personal credit information. This is a legitimate government website. Among the options, the national credit bureaus offer a toll-free number that enables consumers to opt-out of all preapproved credit offers for five years with just one phone call. It is my understanding that this action also restricts the credit agencies from disseminating your personal credit information to these same agents. Be advised that you will be required to submit your Social Security Number during the registration process.
